E5E · Thermal energy

Measure energy in larger pipework.

An ultrasonic energy meter that measures heating and cooling energy separately, in both directions, on pipes from DN25 to DN1200. It suits the chilled-water and cooling-water circuits of central air conditioning.

At a glance

What E5E does, in plain words.

What it measures
Flow and thermal energy
Liquid flow plus supply and return temperatures, to work out heating or cooling energy.
How it installs
Clamp-on or insertion
Clamp-on sensors fit outside the pipe. Insertion versions go through the pipe wall.
How it connects
PoE / Ethernet
One Ethernet cable carries both power and data.
Works with MeterTube, the pFlow app and cloud platform.
Pipe sizes
DN25–DN1200 (clamp-on)
DN is the nominal pipe size, roughly the inside diameter in millimetres.

Why E5E

E5E in short.

E5E measures heating and cooling energy separately, in both directions, with a modular design, menu operation and a backlit LCD.

It works with clamp-on or insertion flow sensors and PT1000 temperature sensors. Power and network data share one PoE cable, so readings can be followed in real time on a phone or a PC.

  • Heating and cooling measured separately, in both directions
  • Flow accuracy ±1%, energy ±2%
  • Clamp-on or insertion sensors; DN25–DN1200 clamp-on
  • Energy-efficiency monitoring with real-time curves
  • Power and data over one PoE cable
Where it is used
  • Energy saving
  • Air conditioning
  • Building automation systems
  • Data centres
  • Energy audits
  • HVAC

How it works

Sound with the flow arrives sooner.

Two sensors on the same side of the pipe take turns sending sound through the water. Sound travelling with the flow arrives slightly sooner than sound travelling against it; the meter turns that time difference into flow, which is why it needs to know your pipe.

  1. Measure the water flow. The ultrasonic sensors read flow through the pipe wall.
  2. Measure two temperatures.Temperature sensors measure the supply and return water.
  3. Calculate thermal energy. The meter combines flow and the temperature difference to give heating or cooling energy.

Pipe & installation

What the meter needs to know about your pipe.

These are set up on the meter after installation. Pipe size and transducer type are decided when ordering.

What these terms mean
DN
Nominal pipe size, roughly the inside diameter in millimetres (DN50 ≈ 50 mm).
Clamp-on
Sensors strap to the outside of the pipe. No cutting, no shutdown for installation.
PoE
Power over Ethernet: one network cable carries power and data.
LoRaWAN
Long-range, low-power wireless. Readings travel through a gateway to a network server.
Modbus RS485
A wired connection widely used by building and industrial control systems.
4–20 mA
An analogue signal where the current represents the reading.
